GT Parent Academy Announcement

We are holding our first GT Parent Academy in October. The focus of this academy will be to provide an overview of the GT Education Program. An HCPSS announcement has been posted and printable/downloadable flier has been created with event details and registration information. Registration is required for these events.
 
We are asking that you please share this information with your administration so that it can be shared with your school community as soon as possible through your school newsletter and/or Canvas. 
 
Howard County GT Program Parent Academy, October 13 and 14, 2021 
HCPSS families interested in the Gifted and Talented (GT) Program are invited to come learn about the advanced-level offerings available and how their students can become involved. The evening will begin with an overview of GT Education Program offerings followed by a question-and-answer session with Central Office GT Education Program staff. Elementary and Secondary programs will be covered on separate days. Families may attend one or both nights. Registration is required for these events.
 
Elementary Focus: Wednesday, October 13, 7 – 8:00 p.m., being held virtually via Microsoft Team
Secondary Focus: Thursday, October 14, 7-8:00 p.m., being held virtually via Microsoft Teams

Interpreter Request for November Conferences

If you need interpreting service in your home language for November parent/teacher conferences, please contact Mr. Sung Kim at sung_kim@hcpss.org with your child’s name, school, grade, and the language you need. Please send your request by Friday, October 15, 2021.

Evening School Tutoring

The HCPSS Evening School program offers virtual grade-level academic support sessions for eligible elementary and middle school students who must quarantine or who are struggling academically. These sessions are an addition to other supports for students in quarantine.

Students Should Bring Fully Charged Chromebooks to School Daily

Students in Grades 2-12 who bring Chromebooks back and forth to school are expected to bring the devices fully charged every day. Find information about how to care for and safely transport student Chromebooks. Complete information about technology and devices is provided online.

  • Lions' Pride Greens Sale: https://sherwoodfundraiser.com/LionsPride
    Please support Lions' Pride and the Athletics Department through our 2nd annual Holiday Greens sale. Families can choose to pick up their order at Howard High School or have direct delivery to their home. Sales began Sept. 10th and will end on Nov. 5th. Pick up will be at Howard High School the week of Thanksgiving. Time and date to be determined. For an additional fee, you can also order for items to be delivered directly to your home or as a gift to family/friends.

    The Howard High School Baseball Team is excited to offer a fall baseball camp for 5th to 8th graders. The camp will run Oct. 11th - 14th from 4:15 pm to 5:45 pm at the Howard Baseball field. The cost for the camp is $100.

HCYP Basketball:  For those interested in trying out for the HCYP Eagles Basketball teams:
  • The HCYP Eagles JV Boys Basketball Team (6th and 7th Graders) coached by Jeff Merkey have tryouts on 10/6 from 6 – 9:00 pm at Burleigh Manor

HCPSS Community News / Events: Families can quickly discover educational and recreational resources, events, and after-school programs offered by community non-profits on HCPSS’s new Community News and Programs website.

Registration: STARTALK Chinese Language After-School Virtual Program
Submit enrollment requests online through Saturday, October 2, 8 a.m.
This free, 15-week virtual immersion program is open to current 7th and 8th grade students interested in learning the language and culture of China. Classes will be held on Tuesdays from 5-6:30 p.m. via Google Meet, starting October 12. Enrollment will be handled through a lottery system. Parents/guardians must submit an enrollment request via HCPSS Connect, and will be notified via email of whether their child has been enrolled or placed on a waitlist.

Hispanic Heritage Month Virtual Book Club
Thursday, October 14 and Thursday, October 21, 6:30 p.m., virtual meetings
Students in grades 7-12 are invited to attend a virtual book club to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Participants will discuss Crystal Maldonado's Fat Chance, Charlie Vega. Register online to receive emailed instructions for attending the virtual meetings. Students who register by September 30th will receive a free copy of the book.

Parent Empowerment Virtual Conference: Families of students receiving special education services and anyone interested can register by Oct. 6 to attend this free conference, being held Oct. 12-14 via Google Meet. The conference will cover topics related to supporting your child’s learning and participating in the IEP process.
